In late July, Google announced that it will be offering live traffic information to mobile phones in more than thirty U.S. cities. Plans to provide the traffic feature to PCs are still in the works. The Google traffic feature will be released as an update to the free Google Maps for Mobile service, which has been available for 18 months for download on the Google web site. Google would not disclose how many subscribers it has, but it says the number is growing rapidly.
The feature expands Google’s mapping technology into an area where Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo already have a presence, but in different ways. Yahoo and Microsoft offer real-time traffic information on their Web-based mapping services for PCs. Microsoft has chosen to move into the mobile “space” by licensing traffic-monitoring technology for mobile devices to a Kirkland-based startup, InRix Inc. Yahoo currently has no mobile traffic service. MapQuest, an AOL property, offers traffic reports over cell phones for .99 per month.
With typical bombast, Microsoft announced that when operable, the InRix mobile service will actually predict upcoming traffic problems – however currently the MSN mobile mapping technology provides no traffic information at all.
In the cities where it works, the Google feature will show traffic conditions on most major highways – indicating green for clear roadways, yellow for medium congestion and red for high congestion or stopped traffic. Google Maps will work on most Java-enabled phones offered by Cingular and Sprint and all color BlackBerry devices. The service does not currently work on phones from other major carriers such as Verizon or T-Mobile USA. Google Maps sends the data – obtained from an undisclosed source – every five minutes.
Although Google’s free service doesn’t identify traffic hazards or accidents, it will let drivers know if there is a clogged road. Google also shows the expected drive time for a route when phone users search for driving directions. It has introduced a feature that lets users save their favorite locations and frequently used driving directions for future use.
The three search engines are not alone, however. In February, Rand McNally Traffic began offering a downloadable mobile application that delivers news of real-time traffic flow, accidents, weather conditions and road closures to 94 cities. Rand McNally Traffic is available on Sprint, Nextel, AT&T Wireless and other services for .99 a month.
Media giant Clear Channel Communications’ Total Traffic Network feeds content in 125 markets in the country to 15 services. One of them provides the information to subscribers with Sprint mobile phones for a .99 monthly subscription. That service is relatively new. In addition to weather conditions and traffic information, the service also provides data on gas station prices.
Cell phones are rapidly turning into GPS devices, with localized information as an added feature. It remains to be seen how many people will turn to their cell phone screens for traffic news, one eye on the road and another on the phone. In some states and several local jurisdictions, it is already illegal to use a handheld cell phone while driving. Some of these jurisdictions allow hands free use, but that won’t help with a visual feature. It will be interesting to see if this new functionality is limited by governmental concern over safe driving habits.

Also there is a review system built into most social bookmark sites that can give prospects an idea of what to expect on a certain site. ” Targeted vs. non-targeted traffic: Networks have more targeted traffic because they are usually only meant for your friends, whereas a social bookmark site is shared more with everyone who uses that bookmarking service. With social bookmark sites you leave your favorites list open to anyone who searches for any of the keywords you have listed or keywords of the sites in your favorites list. The best way to use social bookmark sites in your campaign is to be sure you bookmark all of your sites and all your sub-pages; every page in your site map must be bookmarked. This increases the chance of someone finding your site using one of the search engines on the bookmark site. My advice is to always use social bookmarking sites in all of your Internet marketing campaigns.

As an advertiser you’re probably tired of playing the bidding wars by being forced into paying top dollar for good keywords. This tends to be particularly true when advertising in highly competitive markets and lucrative keywords and worse yet constantly having to deal with click fraud and junk traffic that hardly converts or is barely profitable.
The good news as an advertiser is that there are lots of new players in the pay-per-click and traffic generations arenas with large and diverse enough networks of sites that can deliver a good steady amount of traffic to your sites and sales page. Here is a quick look at some of the alternatives:

Although adCenter is quickly becoming popular among former AdWords and Yahoo users and driving up prices you may still be able to place ads in some markets with good results and not have to worry about running out of traffic which can occur with some of the smaller advertising networks.
NeoEdge Networks is a rather interesting advertising solution that places your ads into online games. There are three options for placing your ad including before and after a game and in between levels. They can deliver a good amount of traffic however your product should be marketed towards and look appealing for online gamers.
A lesser known traffic network is GoClick. Using GoClick you can get incredibly cheap clicks often for pennies. You should always keep in mind that when first starting out to limit the amount or never buy any kind of traffic for a brand new sales page or an untested affiliate promotion… You can end up blowing a lot of dough by doing this if you’re not careful or lack experience using online advertising.
For new sales pages or affiliate promotions you can use other forms of free traffic generation like article marketing, forums, blogs or social bookmarking sites to test the waters and see how well the offer converts into sales. PPV traffic simply means pay per view traffic. This means that you will pay the advertising network every time your website or advertisement is displayed to a viewer.
You pay simply to have someone view your website. This is similar to the very popular pay per click model which is used by Google AdWords. The difference is that with Google AdWords you pay every time someone clicks on your Google Ad located on the side of Google search results or on a related web page. You are not paying for a click on your site you are paying for a click on your ad which in turn leads to your site.
The pay per click model which is used by Google AdWords is the most successful advertising model ever created. It is responsible for 95% of Google’s million per day income.
There are several type of pay per view traffic. You can pay for PPV traffic as a pop under, banner advertising, display advertising on related websites and even on mobile phones.
One of the most interesting models of pay per view traffic is the “desktop pop-under” pay per view traffic advertising model. Basically this type of traffic is spy ware gone good! Wait! Do not get scared. This is how it works.
Pay per view traffic networks give away free software and internet tools to users by the millions. These users agree very clearly to receive keyword targeted advertisements for the privilege of using these valuable software or computer tools. The users are also instructed very clearly how to “opt out” of the network and remove the software and advertisements.
The difference between the old spy ware model and the new desktop pop under PPV traffic is that users clearly give their permission to receive the ads and they are clearly instructed on how to remove the software and ads. It is permission based. It is the old spy ware model legitimized into a real advertising network.
From the advertisers perspective this PPV traffic has several advantages. First of all the traffic is keyword targeted. For example if the use goes to his browser and starts to type the URL of his favorite auto site and your keyword is automobiles your automobile website will pop under.
This is highly targeted keyword traffic similar to the Google AdWords model. With the pay per click Google AdWords model users search Google using keywords and keyword targeted advertising appears along side the search results. The advertiser may also target PPV traffic according to country and region which is very similar to Google AdWords. With PPV traffic the advertiser can spend as little as 1 cents per view of his actual website.
The desktop pop under type of pay per view traffic has been gaining favor with internet marketers lately because of it’s ability to deliver highly targeted keyword advertising for very reasonable costs.
The disadvantages of pay per view traffic is that the networks cannot even compare with the viewership of Google or Yahoo. Most major PPV traffic networks have about 5 million unique users which is just a fraction of Google or Yahoo’s reach. If the advertisers only wants to reach a certain city or small region there simply are not enough users in the PPV traffic network to make this type of pay per view traffic effective. PPV traffic is better for more general offers which can be targeted by country. However, this may change as PPV traffic networks obtain more and more users.
